Cold Air Drafts
Cold air drafts are one of the most uncomfortable problems to have in a house. Excellent insulation is no protection against the gaps and cracks in our homes that allow unconditioned air in.
Drafts are usually from one of two sources: air leaks in the home’s shell (including gaps in windows and doors), or under-performing windows.
Gaps and Cracks
Sealing air leaks in your home is the easiest and most cost effective way to increase your comfort and efficiency. This may involve adjusting exterior doors and windows, adding weather stripping, or using expanding foam to seal around openings.
Under-performing Window Glazing
Older single glazed or aluminum frame windows will create what feels like a draft coming in from the outside. In reality, it is a convective current of indoor air that cools against the window pane and then “falls” down and across your floor. Installing double or triple pane windows with a low U-Value (low energy transmittance) will prevent this kind of draft.
